MNP Helps Troops with Taxes

EDMONTON – MARCH 9, 2012 – With tax deadlines rapidly approaching, MNP LLP is delivering a free seminar to military personnel at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton. The one-hour seminar will cover a range of financial and tax topics that participants may be able to use to reduce their taxes this year or to plan for the future.

The idea for delivering the session on the base came from MNP business advisor Jon Gallo, who served in the military several years ago. “When I was in Battalion, soldiers would ask me about financial matters. Some were running businesses, either alone or with spouses and friends, and they didn’t know where to turn for advice,” says Gallo. “Now that I’m pursuing the chartered accountant designation and working with professionals in this field, I am proud to be able to supply the answers to the people who are serving our country.”

Gallo and Murray Redinger, a partner with MNP, will jointly deliver the presentation. The session will cover topics such as RRSPs, TFSAs, tax minimization and the tax effects of divorce. The presenters will also discuss the pros and cons of incorporating side businesses, and the tax credits that are typically missed when it comes to employment income.

“We are just so proud to be able to give back to our troops this way,” says Darren Turchansky, managing partner, MNP, Edmonton Region. “MNP is a strong supporter of community and this is a unique way to contribute. When Jon brought up the idea, we immediately knew that it fit with our firm’s values and was something that could really make a difference.”

The session will be held on March 12, 2012 at 2:30 p.m., where there will also 20-minute mingling and question period to follow. After the presentation, the Regiment will take MNP on a tour of the base.
